Boy critically injured in 80-foot fall

A 16-year-old boy was flown from the rocky shoreline off Kailua after he suffered critical injuries in an 80-foot fall from a cliff into the ocean Saturday, the Maui Fire Department reported.

Paia firefighters and a fire rescue crew aboard the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter responded to the 12:18 p.m. call, with Air One quickly locating the boy on the rocky shoreline, according to the Fire Department. The rescue crew packaged and extracted the boy, who was flown aboard the helicopter to a landing zone mauka of Hana Highway. From there, the was loaded into an awaiting Maui Medevac air unit and flown to Maui Memorial Medical Center, the Fire Department reported.

The boy, whose place of residence was unavailable, suffered possible spinal injuries, according to the Fire Department.
