A fire spread by strong trade winds burned about a half-acre of brush before being contained Tuesday afternoon in the Piihana Road area of Wailuku, the Maui Fire Department reported.

Firefighters on the ground were supported by the department’s Air One helicopter making water drops in less accessible areas to contain the fire at a half-acre, the department said.

Along with the helicopter, Wailuku and Kahului engine companies and a Kahului tanker responded to the 12:49 p.m. call in hot temperatures with gusty trade winds that were forecast at up to 30 mph.

The fire was brought under control by 2 p.m., with mop-up continuing Tuesday.

The cause was undetermined.
