Fires along Haleakala Highway extinguished

Firefighters extinguish a brush fire along Haleakala Highway at North Firebreak Road early Wednesday. The fire, which burned about 750 square feet, was one of two brush fires reported at 6:10 a.m. Wednesday on the mauka-bound side of the highway. The other fire burned about 2,000 square feet of brush at Keahua Road. Both fires were quickly contained and extinguished, according to the Maui Fire Department. Makawao and Kahului engine companies and a Kahului tanker responded, with assistance from state Department of Transportation Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting units. The cause of the fires was unknown. Fire crews left the scenes shortly after 8 a.m.
