Hawaii’s gas prices up as national rates fall
The average price of regular unleaded gas in Kahului reached $5.75 per gallon on Thursday as rates continue to climb in Hawaii despite drops elsewhere, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch.
All Hawaii metro areas set new price records in the past week, though some have declined since then.
Kahului’s average price on Thursday was four cents higher than last week, 26 cents higher than last month and $1.80 higher than a year ago. The only location in the state with higher prices was Lihue at $5.86. Hilo was averaging $5.59, followed by Honolulu at $5.45.
Overall, Hawaii’s average price was $5.56, one cent more than last week and a new record for the state. The average national price, meanwhile, is $4.94, down seven cents from a week ago.
“Gas prices have been declining throughout the rest of the country in response to oil and wholesale gasoline pricing and future trading decreases related to concerns about the economy, according to Oil Price Information Service,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “We would expect Hawaii prices to reverse course if this trend continues.”
