Man pleads not guilty to murder

A man has been indicted on a charge of second-degree murder in the killing of a 42-year-old woman at his residence in Kanaio.

Brian Sherrell, 54, pleaded not guilty to the charge during his arraignment Wednesday in 2nd Circuit Court. He appeared by videoconference from the Maui Community Correctional Center, where he is being held without bail.

Police said the victim, Angela Johnson, who was in a relationship with Sherrell, was dead when he took her to the Kula Hospital emergency room at 8:31 a.m. June 19.

He was arrested two days later at Kahului Airport as he was about to leave the state, police said.

The indictment alleges the murder occurred between June 17 and 19 and alleges Sherrell committed the murder “in an especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel manner, manifesting exceptional depravity.”

If convicted as charged, Sherrell could face life in prison without the possibility of parole.

An Aug. 10 pretrial conference is set for Sherrell.
