MCCC inmate pronounced dead

A male inmate who was found unconscious and unresponsive in his cell at the Maui Community Correctional Center was later pronounced dead Wednesday night, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

The inmate, who was between the ages of 30-40 years old, was found by jail staff at around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Assigned staff immediately began administering aid and called 911. They performed CPR until Emergency Medical Services arrived and took over lifesaving procedures, the department said Thursday.

The inmate was pronounced dead by EMS at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Following normal procedure, Maui police were notified and an internal investigation as well as a law enforcement investigation are pending, the department said.

The department said it will not be releasing any more information at this time in order to allow the ongoing investigations to take their course.
