Police: No signs of foul play in Paia death
The body of a man found in brush off the Paia bypass last month showed no signs of foul play, based on preliminary investigation, police said.
Firefighters located the body after emergency workers were assigned to the area of 56 Hana Highway at 6:23 a.m. May 30, police said.
The man has been identified as 51-year-old John Palicki of Paia.
The case is classified as an unattended death, with autopsy results pending, police said.
Police provided information about the death in response to rumors circulating in the community and on social media alleging three murders had occurred in Paia in recent weeks.
Police said rumors about that a 16-year-old girl and another man were killed in Paia “are false.”
“There have been no murder/homicide cases this year in Paia,” police said.
Police said the only murder in Maui County this year occurred this month. A 54-year-old man has been indicted on a charge of second-degree murder of a 42-year-old woman, who was dead when he took her to the Kula Hospital emergency room June 19, police said.
