Man charged with assaulting officers

A 38-year-old Kula man was being held on $2,000 bail at the Wailuku police station on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting two police officers on Monday, police said.

Brian Emmanuel was charged with two counts of assault against a police officer in the first degree.

Police said that around 11:30 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a Waihee residence regarding an abuse case. While en route, officers were advised to issue a warning citation to the person, later identified as Emmanuel, in relation to a previous incident, police said.

When police arrived, officers attempted to explain why they were there and issue the warning citation.

Emmanuel allegedly became belligerent, cursed at an officer and would not comply with police requests. As officers attempted to detain the man, he pushed and charged at an officer. Emmanuel was subsequently Tased but continued to advance and struck an officer in the head twice.

Officers were able to get Emmanuel under control and transported to the Wailuku station. Both officers suffered minor injuries and declined medical attention.
