Brush fire burns 9 acres in Kahului

Maui Fire Department crews respond to a brush fire that burned about 9 acres in Kahului on Sunday afternoon. Crews received the call at 12:26 p.m. and arrived on scene behind Safeway at Hookele Street and Pulehu Road to find a fire moving quickly through dry brush, fanned by strong winds, according to the Fire Department. The fire was 100 percent contained by 3:45 p.m., with crews remaining on scene to mop up. Responding units included an engine from Wailuku; engine, rescue, tanker and relief tanker crews from Kahului; a tanker from Wailea; the department’s Air One helicopter; and a battalion chief. TJ Gomes Trucking also helped with heavy equipment. The cause of the fire was unknown, MFD said.
