Kahului gas prices drop again

Gas prices in Kahului on Thursday were nine cents cheaper than a week ago as all metro areas of the state saw price drops for the second straight week, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Kahului was $5.61, which is 20 cents lower than last month but still $1.51 higher than a year ago.

Lihue’s average price was $5.73, while Hilo’s average price was $5.47 and Honolulu’s average price was $5.32. Each of the rates was five cents lower than the previous week’s average for the area.

Statewide, Hawaii’s average gas price was $5.42, down six cents from the previous week but still well above the national average price of $4.14, which is down 13 cents from a week ago.

“Hawaii gas prices are still just about 20 cents below their all-time record levels of June and July, which is a bit disappointing considering that other states have dropped by 70 cents or more from their record levels,” AAA Hawaii General Manager Liane Sumida said. “However, oil prices continue to drop and that should spur more price decreases locally.”
