Man allegedly assaulted girlfriend

A man was arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend in the parking lot of a Kahului store early Saturday.

Anthony Almeida, 32, of Makawao was charged with second-degree assault, violating an order for protection and abuse.

The woman was struck in the face in the early morning Saturday when she and Almeida got into an argument about his court case, said Deputy Prosecutor Joshua Kent.

In asking for bail to be increased from $3,000 to $75,000 for Almeida, Kent said “the bottom line is the state feels the defendant is a danger to the community, specifically the complaining witness.”

Almeida is on probation for prior convictions for first-degree criminal property damage and first-degree terroristic threatening, and he was arrested on a $25,000 warrant alleging he wasn’t complying with his probation, Kent said. Almeida also is awaiting trial on charges including felony abuse and second-degree assault of his girlfriend, Kent said.

Almeida asked to be released on supervision, with Deputy Public Defender Joan Tuers saying he has worked at the same job for six months and couldn’t afford to post bail.

Judge Chris Dunn kept bail at $3,000 for Almeida. He was ordered to have no contact with his girlfriend and to stay away from her residence and workplace.
