Man held on bail in attempted murder case
A Haiku man was arrested for allegedly firing shots, including one that hit a man in the arm, when three people who went to his residence to retrieve items early Tuesday, police said.
Brian McKeague, 36, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, three counts of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree criminal property damage, prohibited possession of a firearm and using a firearm in the commission of a separate felony.
When police went to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room at 4:55 a.m. Tuesday, a 48-year-old Waikapu man reported that he and two others had been at the Haiku residence at 2:45 a.m. to retrieve items from McKeague, who is a friend.
Police said McKeague reportedly became upset that the three people were there. While the three began leaving the property, McKeague fired three shots — one striking the passenger side of a pickup truck, one penetrating the front passenger side windshield of a 2011 Mercedes sedan and a third striking the 48-year-old man in the arm, police said.
Police Special Response Team officers and drone team unsuccessfully searched for McKeague at his residence, police said.
He was located at 1:50 p.m. Tuesday at Kahului Airport and arrested.
Bail for McKeague was set at more than $4 million.
