Man accused of using bat, mallet to attack Napili resident

The Maui News

WAILUKU — A man was arrested for allegedly using a baseball bat and rubber mallet to attack another man after entering his home without permission.

James McDonald, 61, was charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree assault and second-degree terroristic threatening.

During McDonald’s initial appearance Tuesday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Joshua Kent asked for bail to be kept at $20,000 for McDonald.

He was arrested Monday on a warrant alleging he entered the other man’s house on Mahinahina Street in Napili without permission Aug. 9 and attacked the man, Kent said.

He said the man reported being struck 20 times with the baseball bat and twice with the rubber mallet. The man suffered a bloody nose, laceration on his nose, nasal and scalp contusions, a left fractured thumb bone, abrasions on his nose and hands, a left foot contusion and lip laceration, Kent said.

He said the bail amount was fair for McDonald, who has three prior convictions each for DUI, contempt of court and failure to appear.

Deputy Public Defender Lindsay Lipp asked for lower bail for McDonald, who is disabled and awaiting surgery.

Judge Chris Dunn maintained bail at $20,000.

McDonald was ordered to stay away from the other man and his residence.

Starting at $4.62/week.
