Improving transmission

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photos

P&R Tower Co. tower technicians Dezmond Ballard (bottom) and Mike Snyder work on a new 280-foot steel radio tower Tuesday morning between Maui Veterans Highway and Kealia Pond National Wildlife Sanctuary. The tower used for three Pacific Radio Group AM stations replaces a rusted 280-foot tower that was in the same spot. P&R Tower Co. owner Jason Kardokus said his crew toppled the old tower like a tree on Friday and had the new one in place and transmitting by late Monday afternoon. “I think we did a pretty fast job,” he said. A microwave receiver at the top of the tower receives the three stations’ programming from Kahului and transfers it to the transmitter located at the tower’s base.
