Hamai Appliance, No Child Hungry assemble relief packages
More than 5,000 relief packages and more than 20,000 meals were assembled on Sept. 23 in an effort by Hamai Appliance and nonprofit No Child Hungry to assist those affected by the Aug. 8 fires.
The packages and meals were put together by the Kamehameha Schools Maui girls basketball team, Troop 18 Boy Scouts, and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Hamai Appliance in Kahului.
The packages contained hygiene kits, basic food supplies and other essential goods. On Sept. 24, the items were distributed at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa where many of those displaced by the fire are staying.
Shortly after the fires, Hamai Appliance’s partner, Serta Simmons bedding, donated more than 100 mattresses, which have been distributed to King’s Cathedral and several individuals who have lost their homes and belongings, according to a news release.
“It’s an honor to give back to the community, but also to have so many great organizations and people willing to do it along side us,” said Bryant Hamai, president of Hamai Appliance.
