Police ID motorcyclist killed in Kahului crash

The Maui Police Department has identified the motorcycle operator who died after colliding into the curb on Hookele Street on Saturday as 25-year-old Josue Carrillo of Kihei.

At about 12:04 a.m. Saturday, Carrillo and a passenger were traveling eastbound on Hookele Street on a blue 2012 Yamaha YZF-R6 motorcycle when he failed to navigate a right bend in the roadway, according to a preliminary investigation. The motorcycle crossed left into the oncoming lane before striking the curb, then a tree and a speed limit sign on the grass shoulder. Police said Carrillo and the passenger were ejected from the motorcycle and onto the roadway.

The accident occurred 0.1 mile east of Pakaula Street in Kahului.

Carrillo died at the scene. The passenger, an 18-year-old Kahului woman, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition for further treatment.

Both Carrillo and the passenger were wearing helmets at the time of the crash, police said. The involvement of speed, alcohol and drugs has not been determined, as the investigation is still pending.

This is Maui County’s 15th traffic fatality of 2023, compared to 16 at the same time last year.
