The Maui Fire Department and Maui police responded to a brush fire in the Piihana area of Wailuku at about 2:40 p.m. Thursday.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find an area of over a half-acre of brush burning. Firefighters extended hose lines and attacked the fire from multiple sides to minimize the spread in the direction of any homes.

The fire resulted in precautionary evacuations and the closure of a portion of Honoapiilani Highway. One residence along Pi’ihana Road was evacuated because of its close proximity to the brush fire, according to police.

Multiple units responded to the blaze including at least two MFD air units, three fire engines, a hazmat crew, two tankers and a relief tanker, as well as private tankers from Alpha and Hawaiian Dredging.

The fire is estimated to have burned around 4.6 acres, and the Honoapiilani was closed to allow fire units to work along the highway.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage to homes. No containment percentages were available as of 5 p.m. Thursday, but MFD said all flame activity has been knocked down.

Maui County officials asked people to avoid the area to allow first responders to work. As of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, all evacuations had been lifted.

Crews remained on scene overnight to continue mop-up and address any flare-ups. The area received light showers Friday morning, as well as overnight Thursday.

Local officials said firefighters will continue to monitor the area throughout the day Friday.

The Maui Emergency Management Agency was also partially activated.

Starting at $4.62/week.
