A 49-year-old woman from Haiku died in a rollover wreck at approximately 10:02 a.m. Wednesday on Baldwin Avenue about a half mile southeast of Anohou Street in Paia.

Maui police say the woman’s death is Maui County’s first fatality of 2025.

According to police, based on the preliminary investigation, the woman was driving a white 2000 Toyota 4-Runner when the vehicle failed to navigate a left bend in the road and drifted right onto the grassy shoulder.

The investigation showed the woman then overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle as it hit a curb, fire hydrant and a fence. The SUV overturned and came to a rest on its roof. The woman was partially ejected from the SUV and died at the scene.

Authorities said the woman’s name is being withheld for 24 hours to allow her family an opportunity to notify extended family and friends.

According to the preliminary investigation, the woman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck and speed is considered a factor. The involvement of alcohol and drugs has yet to be determined. The investigation is ongoing.
