Sen. Hirono names nominees to attend U.S. service academies

On Friday, U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono announced the nomination of 39 Hawaii students to U.S. military service academies for the class of 2029. The nominees will advance for consideration by each academy’s director of admissions.

“Each year, Hawaii students from all walks of life apply to our military service academies with aspirations of serving our country,” Hirono said. “These young people work hard to earn nominations and I am proud to announce this year’s impressive group of nominees. I know they will represent our state with pride and distinction.”

The announcement includes Hirono’s nominations for the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. After members of Congress submit nominations for their respective states, each of the academy director of admissions selects from the submitted lists of nominees.

Among the local students on Maui, Hirono has nominated Maddox DelleFave of Kihei Charter School for the U.S. Naval Academy. Also, Ka’ai Kalau’ihi of Molokai High School, Sammi Kinoshita of Baldwin High School, Samantha Teschler of Maui Prep Academy and DelleFave were nominated for the U.S. Air Force Academy.
