The Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission releases 2024 year in review

The Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission has released its fiscal year 2024 report.

The mission of the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission is to undertake

the restoration of the Kaho’olawe Island, including the diversity of the ecosystem as well as the two-miles of surrounding ocean.

At 28,800 acres, Kaho’olawe is the smallest of the eight main islands in the Hawaiian archipelago. According to the report, after 200 years of uncontrolled grazing by goats, sheep and cattle, and another 50 years of misuse as a live-fire training range by the U.S. Navy, approximately 30% of the island has suffered from severe erosion and invasive species.
