Wailuku man killed when flatbed tow truck overturns on Pulehuiki Road

A 42-year-old man driving a flatbed tow truck carrying six large concrete retaining walls blocks died in a rollover wreck on Friday.

According to Maui County police, the man was from Wailuku. He was driving the flatbed tow truck on Pulehuiki Road about a half-mile east of Lower Kula Road in Kula. The wreck happened at approximately 3:37 p.m. Friday.

The preliminary investigation shows the 2007 Kenworth truck failed to navigate a right curve in the road and hit a metal guardrail before overturning.

The flatbed was loaded with six large concrete retaining wall blocks. The blocks were ejected in the wreck and struck an unattended green 2006 Toyota Sienna, a fence and a residence, according to police.

The 42-year-old driver of the Kenworth was pronounced deceased at the scene. The occupants of the residence were not injured.

According to police, the preliminary investigation found the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck, and speed was a factor in the collision.
