Stage 1 water shortage declared for Upcountry Maui
A Stage 1 water shortage is in effect for the Upcountry area, according to the Maui County Department of Water Supply.
The affected area includes Makawao, Upper and Lower Kula, Haʻikū, Hāliʻimaile, Pukalani, Kokomo, Kaupakalua, Ulumalu, K”ōkea, ʻUlupalakua and Kanaio.
County officials say that despite recent rainfall, reservoir levels remain insufficient, prompting the county to request conservation measures and impose irrigation restrictions.
Irrigation is now limited to two days per week based on address type and number. Even-numbered residential addresses are allowed to water on Mondays and Fridays, while odd-numbered addresses are only supposed to water on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Even-numbered commercial facilities and multi-family units may water on Wednesdays and Sundays. Odd-numbered commercial facilities and multi-family units may water on Mondays and Thursdays.
Leaks must be repaired within five days of notice, and pools may not be refilled with potable water unless required for public health or safety. Filling ornamental ponds is prohibited unless they sustain aquatic life and were actively managed before the shortage declaration.
Voluntary conservation measures include limiting irrigation to early morning or evening hours, avoiding watering after measurable rainfall, and using commercial car washes or hoses with shut-off nozzles for vehicles.
Restaurants are being asked to serve water only upon request, and hotels are encouraged to offer towel and linen reuse options.
