As part of its continuing commitment to advancing education in the sustainable science field, UH Maui College has become the first UH campus to sign the Beyond Benign Green Chemistry Commitment.

The Green Chemistry Commitment, created by the nonprofit Beyond Benign, connects colleges and universities working to expand the use of green chemistry principles in higher education.

According to the college, the commitment reinforces UH Maui College’s ongoing dedication to sustainability and connects it to a wider community of scientists and educators, offering access to shared resources and tools.

“I’m thrilled that our department has taken on the Green Chemistry Commitment,” said Sean Calder, UHMC Division Chair – STEM, in a statement. “This will enable the college to lower our chemical waste generation and help us become better stewards of the environment, creating a more sustainable future for Maui.”

School officials say the Green Chemistry Commitment will help UH Maui College build on its foundation and integrate the latest advancements in green chemistry into its programs.

Officials added that students will benefit through hands-on experience in designing safer, more sustainable chemical processes — skills that are increasingly in demand in today’s job market. The curriculum also emphasizes critical thinking and awareness of the environmental and health impacts of chemistry.

Finally, the commitment will cultivate an increased awareness of the environmental and health impacts of chemistry, empowering students to make informed and responsible decisions in their future careers.
