Kamehameha Maui repeats as HHSAA Division II football champion

Kamehameha Schools Maui powered past Waimea 48-24 on Friday to capture its second straight Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II football state championship.

With big performances from playmakers Xander Pagan, Zedekaiah Campbell and Kolt Kahoohanohano and a dominant stretch in the second half, the Warriors overcame deficits in total yards and time of possession to take the win.

Waimea struck first with a 24-yard touchdown pass midway through the opening quarter, but KS-Maui answered in the same frame when quarterback Kekoa Keau-Davis connected with Campbell for a 36-yard score.

The Warriors took their first lead when Pagan capped a drive with a 9-yard touchdown run, and kicker Kayden Yap added the PAT for a 13-6 advantage.

Waimea regained momentum with a 48-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, but it lasted only seconds, as Pagan took the ensuing kickoff 92 yards to the end zone, giving KS-Maui a 20-12 lead at halftime.

Waimea scored early in the third quarter to cut the deficit to two points. However, that was before the Warriors took control.

KS-Maui scored the next four touchdowns — including 16- and 27-yard runs from Campbell and a 7-yard touchdown catch by Loea Asuega-Stark from Keau-Davis — to push the lead to 48-18 with under two minutes remaining. Waimea added a late touchdown to close out the scoring.

Pagan and Campbell each finished with three touchdowns.

Pagan scored twice on 9-yard runs and once on the 92-yard kickoff return, piling up 221 all-purpose yards, including 150 on kick returns.

At the same time, Campbell carried the ball 25 times for 146 yards and had two receptions for 35 yards.

Keau-Davis completed 8 of 13 passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

KS-Maui’s defense forced five turnovers — three fumble recoveries and two interceptions — which the Warriors converted into 20 points.

Kahoohanohano led the Warriors with nine tackles — seven solo — a forced fumble and two interceptions returned for 39 yards.

KS-Maui’s Aukai Phillips added seven tackles and a fumble recovery, while Kamealoha Lanoza-Uyeda and Yap also recovered fumbles. Frank Abreu had five tackles including a sack for a loss of 10 yards.

Waimea outgained KS-Maui 218 yards to 76 through the air and held an advantage in time of possession, but failed to convert twice on fourth down.

The victory capped another championship season for KS-Maui, which has now won back-to-back Division II state titles. The Warriors defeated Kaiser 37-14 in last year’s state championship.
