Annual service to be held at theater

Unity Church will hold its annual Christmas Eve service from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Iao Theater in Wailuku.

Tenor James Price, who recently headlined in “Les Miserables” and is the director of Opera Maui, will be the special guest vocalist for the service. Adissa Omar directs Maui’s first Gospel Choir and is a well-known radio personality, according to an announcement. And, singer-songwriter Louise Lambert also will be featured.

The Rev. Blaine Tinsley will deliver a special message.

Three Christmas Eve services set

Kihei Lutheran Church will offer three worship services on Christmas Eve, at 4, 6 and 8 p.m.

The 4 p.m. service will offer a special hands-on, participatory service for adults and children. It will include a re-enactment of the nativity scene.

Each service will include the singing of Christmas carols, Holy Communion and a variety of special music. The services will conclude with the lighting of candles and the singing of “Silent Night” as the congregation’s hula group dances the traditional Filipino “Pandanggo sa llaw” (“Dance of Light”).

Kihei Lutheran Church is at the intersection of Piilani Highway and Moi Place.

2 services planned for Christmas Eve

Makawao Union Church will celebrate Christmas with two Christmas Eve worship services – a family service at 6 p.m., followed by a candlelight service at 11 p.m.

Both services will tell the Christmas story with special music and the singing of beloved carols. The 6 p.m. service will feature children’s stories and a jazz trio, while hand bell, chancel and men’s choir groups perform at the second service.

Child care will not be provided.

Makawao Union Church is an interdenominational community church at 1445 Baldwin Ave., 2.5 miles uphill from Paia.

St. Joseph Church announces Masses

St. Joseph Church will begin a Christmas vigil Mass at 5 p.m. Wednesday, the church announced.

A children and youth Mass will be held at 7 p.m., followed by Masses at 10 p.m. and midnight.

On Christmas Day, Masses will be celebrated at 7 and 9 a.m. There will be no evening Mass.

Christmas is a holy day of obligation for Catholics.

On New Year’s Eve, Mass will be held at 7 p.m., and on New Year’s Day it will be at 8 a.m.

Pageant, New Year’s Eve service set

Door of Faith Church will present a Christmas Eve pageant titled “Angel Alert” at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

On New Year’s Eve, there will be a candlelight communion service at 10:30 p.m.

Maria Lanakila announces schedule

Maria Lanakila Catholic Church in Lahaina has announced its schedule for holiday services.

At 6 p.m. today, church members will celebrate Advent and Christmas in Lahaina with music and prayer.

Christmas Eve Masses will be held at 6 p.m. and midnight, with carol singing starting at 11:30 p.m.

On Christmas Day, Mass will be celebrated at 7, 9 and 11 a.m. and at 5:30 p.m. A Spanish-language Mass will be at 7 p.m.

Sacred Hearts Mission Church in Kapalua will hold Mass at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve and at 7 and 9 a.m. Christmas Day.

On New Year’s Day, Mass will be celebrated at 8 a.m. at both Maria Lanakila and Sacred Hearts.


Candlelight services planned in Kihei

Kihei Baptist Chapel welcomes people to attend its Christmas Eve candlelight services at 5 and 7 p.m.

The services include singing carols, a special message and sharing the story of Christmas with children.

St. Theresa Church will hold Christmas Eve Masses at 6 and 9 p.m. and midnight and celebrate Christmas Day at 8 and 10 a.m. services.

On New Year’s Eve, the church in Kihei will hold a 7 a.m. Mass and, on New Year’s Day, Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m.

Services to be held under the stars

Trinity Episcopal Church by the Sea invites people to experience Christmas Eve under the stars at the ruins of the church’s David Malo historic sanctuary at 7:30 p.m.

The outdoor sanctuary has the “highest ceiling in the world . . . heaven!” according to an announcement.

On Christmas Day, the church will hold services at 9 a.m.

Children’s program to be offered Sunday

A special Children’s Christmas program, “A Night in Bethlehem,” will be presented at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Apostolic Faith Church (Jesus Coming Soon) at 1211 Front St. in Lahaina.

A special skit will include events that occurred at the time of Jesus’ birth, according to an announcement from Pastor Kenneth Alverio. Directed by Misty Griffiths, the talents of the Sunday School children will be displayed in the skit through solos, instrumentals and musical renditions. Jake Masuda will narrate the program.

An evening service for adults will be held at 7 in the church.


Christmas, eve services slated

Christmas Eve services at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church will begin at 6 p.m. with a costumed pageant and family eucharist, the church announced.

Children and youth will present the story of Christ’s birth, with readings and carols. The church’s Hand Bell Choir also will perform special music and accompany the congregational singing.

Ka ‘Ohana Kitchen will be open to serve anyone in need on Christmas Eve from 7 to 9 p.m. The annual event is hosted by a team led by Sierra Gabrels of the National Park Service. Those who’d like to donate or volunteer are asked to call the church office at 244-4656 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday.

On Christmas Eve, there will be carol singing at 10:30 p.m., featuring members of the Maui Brass Ensemble under the direction of Lisa Owen. The traditional Christmas Mass will begin at 11:15 p.m., with special music with the Senior Choir.

Christmas Day Mass will be held at 9 a.m.

The celebrations of Christmas continue until Epiphany on Jan. 6.

Candlelight service planned

Po’okela Church will host a candlelight service at 7 p.m. Christmas Eve.

The service will include a live nativity and the singing of Christmas carols.

‘Misa de Gallo’ at St. Theresa Church

St. Theresa Church will celebrate “Misa de Gallo,” or dawn Mass, beginning Tuesday and continuing daily through Christmas Eve, the church announced.

The Masses begin at 5 a.m. and will be celebrated by St. Theresa pastor, the Rev. Msgr. Terrence Watanabe.

On Dec. 20, the Mass will be led by Bishop Larry Silva.

Blue Christmas service Dec. 21

Trinity Episcopal Church By-the-Sea will hold a Blue Christmas service at 5 p.m. Dec. 21.

The service is called “a ritual of the dark night and new creation.”

“The holiday season can be a difficult time of year for many reasons; separation from family, loss of job, medical problems,” a church announcement said. “These feelings can be intensified because this is the time of year when we have the least amount of daylight and the most amount of darkness. This service will honor the difficulty of the season and honor the rekindling of the light of creation.”

Haiku Bible Church will present a nativity scene with live characters and animals on its lawn from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, according to an announcement.

Grace Church moves to temporary locale

Grace Church has moved its services to the Kamehameha School Maui campus in Pukalani and will hold a “Re-location Celebration” during the 10 a.m. Dec. 14 worship service in the school’s Kuakini Middle School dining facility, according to an announcement.

The service will be preceded by a 9 a.m. fellowship coffee hour and Bible study class.

Grace Church is building a new church on property purchased in Kulamalu. The church had been located at 55 Makaena Place in Makawao but that property has been sold to the Carden Academy.

The end of the church’s lease prompted the move to the new, temporary location, officials said.


Station to broadcast holiday concert live

“The Spirit,” KEWE radio 1240 AM and 95.5 FM will present a holiday concert at 1 p.m. Saturday with a live performance of the King’s Cathedral Christmas Choir at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center.

KEWE is a 24-hour Christian music station called “the Spirit.” It is part of a radio group including KAOI AM and FM, KDLX FM, KNUQ FM and ISLAND FM.
