Hanukkah party planned for Sunday

The Jewish Congregation of Maui in Kihei will be hosting its annual Community Chanukah Party from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

The evening will feature a candlelighting ceremony, communal singing, latkes and desserts and gift bags for the children.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Naor Nave and Joel Katz of Soul Kitchen.

Jews around the world celebrate Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. For eight nights, beginning Saturday, members of the Jewish community will begin lighting candles of their menorahs, eating traditional foods, singing songs, playing games and giving gifts.

The celebration stems from events 2,000 years ago after the Greeks conquered and defiled the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Judah Maccabee led the Hasmonean Jewish resistance and recaptured Jerusalem and the temple.

They resanctified the temple but found only one sealed earthenware jar of purified olive oil with which to light the menorah, or candelabra. There was only enough oil to burn for one day but the oil miraculously lasted eight days, which was the time it took prepare new oil.

For more information about the event, contact 874-5397 or jcom@hawaiibiz.rr.com. Beit Shalom Synagogue is located at 634 Alulike St.
