Festival of Shavuot to begin Tuesday

The Festival of Shavuot will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Beit Shalom, 634 Alulike St. in Kihei.

The Festival of Shavout is also known as the Festival of Weeks, Festival of First Fruits and the Festival of the Giving. The festival will begin with the Maariv/evening service.

A light Mitzvah meal and a no-time-limit study session/ Tikun Leil Shavuot will follow the service. The session will cover various topics in the Tanach-Bible.

The recommended donation for the Tuesday meal is $18. To RSVP for the meal or to volunteer for food preparation, cleanup or teach/lead a class, call 874-5397 by Monday.

A Shavout service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. It will be a traditional festival morning service, which will include the reading of the Adkamut and the Ten Commandments, if there is a minyan, or quorum of 10.

A Shavuot festival second-day service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday. It will include the chanting of the Book of Ruth and a Yizkor memorial service.

First obon of season at Shingon Mission

The first obon festival of the season will be held at Lahaina Shingon Mission on June 3.

There will be a service at 6:30 p.m., followed by dancing at 7:30 p.m. The temple is located at 862 Luakini St., next to Kobe Steak House.

In addition to the dancing, there will be a food concession, including sushi, baked goods, pickled mango, nishime, shave ice with azuki beans and drinks. There also will be teriyaki and laulau plates, curry chicken bowl, chow fun and chili rice.

Obon dance practice will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the temple.
