Hanamatsuri set in Wailuku

The Maui Hanamatsuri Association will hold its annual Hanamatsuri event Sunday at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku. The day’s events will begin with a 9 a.m. service.

Hanamatsuri, commemorating the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha 2,500 years ago, is one of the most celebrated observances in the Buddhist traditions. Games, prizes, entertainment and a potluck lunch will follow the service.

Sponsoring temples include the Kahului Hongwanji, Kahului Jodo, Makawao Hongwanji, Wailuku Hongwanji and Wailuku Jodo missions.

Valley Isle Fellowship in Wailuku will have an Easter sunrise service at 6 a.m. Sunday in addition to Easter services at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. at 1033 Waiale Road. The community is invited. For more information, call 244-0865.

Hanamatsuri event set in West Maui

Shakyamuni Buddha’s birth, known as Hanamatsuri or Flower Festival, will be celebrated by the West Maui Buddhist community at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the Lahaina Jodo Mission, 12 Ala Moana St. in Lahaina.

The celebration will consist of a service that includes offering sweet tea to the infant statue of the Buddha enshrined in a flower shrine called hanamido and offerings of incense and flowers. The Rev. Shinri Hara will deliver the dharma talk. Fellowship activities will follow the service.

The observance is co-sponsored by the Lahaina Hongwanji Temple, Lahaina Shingon Mission and Lahaina Jodo Mission. All are welcome to join this celebration. For more information, call 661-4304.

Holy Week at St. Anthony

St. Anthony Church in Wailuku continues its Holy Week schedule as follows:

• Noon, today — Good Friday Stations of the Cross.

• 6 p.m., today — Celebration of the Lord’s Passion.

• 7 p.m., Saturday — Holy Saturday Easter Vigil.

• 7 and 9 a.m., Sunday — Easter Sunday Masses. There is no evening Mass on Easter Sunday.

Easter service at Keawalai church

Keawalai Congregational Church in Makena will have its annual Easter Sunrise Service at 7:30 a.m. Sunday on the grounds of the church. The outdoor service will include the sharing of The Lord’s Supper and the Easter floral cross. There will only be one service on Easter Sunday.

Na Leo Nahenahe, the adult choir and special guests will be a part of the worship. Church members and friends are invited to bring single-stem flowers or lei for the cross. These will be placed on the cross during the sharing of The Lord’s Supper.

Services set at Waipuna Chapel

Waipuna Chapel is hosting a Good Friday Service at 7 p.m. today with a quiet service of meditation on the meaning of the cross. There will be children’s ministry for toddlers through grade 5, and a nursery available.

Easter Sunday Services at Waipuna Chapel will be at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. There will be a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ through song, special music, dance and a special Easter message from Pastor Shaun Waite. Sunday School will be available for children ages 3-12.

Trinity Episcopal Church services

Trinity Episcopal Church By-the-Sea has announced its Easter services.

Good Friday services will be today at noon with Stations of the Cross on the Trinity Trail through the gardens surrounding the church. That will be followed by the Good Friday liturgy in Kilolani Hall.

At 7 p.m. Saturday, the Great Vigil of Easter service will be held in Kilolani Hall.

On Easter Sunday at 9 a.m., the church will celebrate its Festival Easter Eucharist in the outdoor sanctuary followed by a Children’s Easter Egg Hunt on the front lawn.

Pookela Church celebrates Easter

Pookela Church will be holding Easter services beginning at 9 a.m., which will be followed by an Easter egg hunt and potluck.

There also will be a bouncing castle for the children.

Good Friday Tenebrae Service or service of darkness will be held at 7 p.m. today.

Hope Chapel holds Easter services

Hope Chapel will be holding a Good Friday service tonight and Easter services on Saturday and Sunday.

The Good Friday service begins at 7 p.m.

Easter services will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday and 6, 8:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday on the church lawn. Those attending can bring their own lawn chairs.

Easter services, except for 6 a.m. Sunday, will include the Children’s Ministry. All Easter services will have free food and fellowship at their conclusion.

Modern Bible study methods offered

Pastor Steve Willis from Virginia will be conducting the April classes on “Bible Study Resources and Methods” at the Faith in Jesus Church in Waiehu.

Part of the Transformation School of Ministries, the classes will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 7.

The rules of biblical interpretation and application to life are examined. Study aids, including Bible computer programs, are introduced.

Degree students pay $150 per semester and audit students, $50. The introductory class is free.

Faith in Jesus Church is located at 432 Waiehu Beach Road.
