Gilbert Shibao
Gilbert “Uncle Gilbert” Yasumi Shibao passed away on December 24, 2024, in Kahului, Hawaii, at the age of 83.
Born on August 11, 1941, in Lahaina, Hawaii to Yasuto and Sugi Shibao. He is survived by his wife Beatrice “Bea” Billianor Shibao; his sons Gilbert “Gary Boy” (Stacey) Shibao and Terry “Terry Boy” (Cynthia “Cydd”) Shibao; grandchildren Abcde (Corey) Rosa, Kekaulike Shibao, Jordan (Clarissa) Shibao, Samantha Shibao and Carter Shibao; great-grandchildren Akshen Rosa and Rowdy Rosa.
He was a loving and committed husband, father, papa and “ji-chan”. His love extended beyond his family and his home. “Uncle Gilbert” as he was affectionately known, always had his door open, an ear to lend, a meal to share and many words of wisdom.
He devoted over five decades to the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, working across various departments and becoming a familiar presence to colleagues and guests alike. Known to those as “Uncle G”. His long-standing commitment to his work reflected a deep sense of loyalty and service.
Beyond his career, Gilbert found joy in following University of Hawaii volleyball and football, never missing a televised game. He also had a gift for storytelling, sharing stories of his childhood. Many stories which turned into life lessons for his children, grand-children, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on March 29, 2025, at Kahului Hongwanji, located at 219 Puunene Avenue in Kahului, Hawaii. Visitation at 9:00 a.m. with service at 10:00 a.m. Gilbert will return home to Lahaina at a later date and placed to rest at Lahaina Hongwanji.
