Big hearts in a little league
Maui is very proud of the players, coaches and parents associated with the Central East Maui Little League All-Star team.
These youngsters finished fourth out of some 6,500 teams that competed to take the title in the 2019 Little League World Series. They lost the United States championship game Saturday night to eventual world champions Louisiana.
Even in Saturday’s defeat, though, they showed grit and determination. Trailing 9-0 in the last half of the last inning of that game, Central East scored five runs and got the tying run to the plate before succumbing to Louisiana.
There was a natural letdown in Sunday’s consolation game after the battle with Louisiana.
Maui Mayor Mike Victorino expressed the thoughts of all of us on his Instagram account:
“We are incredibly proud of our Maui boys and their accomplishments.
“Not only were they the first Maui team to reach the Little League World Series, but they also played for the U.S Championship! We are so grateful to have had such an amazing group of boys represent our county, especially through the sportsmanship they showed on and off the field. Don’t count Maui out to return next year!”
To manager Brad Lung and his players we’d say a hearty “Congratulations” on a job well done. We’d also thank them for being such great ambassadors for Maui and Hawaii. The courage and courtesy they displayed reflected well on all of us.
