Stepping up to the plate for Southwest Airlines

“Southwest: Calif. to Maui, then interisland” was the headlined story for the May 4 issue of The Maui News. If residents are really interested and desirous of having a second airline provide serious competition in the interisland market so airfares can be more reasonable and affordable, I strongly recommend that readers of The Maui News email or write to the president of Southwest Airlines and make their feelings known.

Teachers can ask their students to write letters of support as part of their civic learning experience and mail them to the airline. Adults and all those who have been complaining about the exorbitant fares that Hawaiian Airlines has been charging their passengers for tickets, baggage and change in flight times should definitely contact Southwest Airlines.

If we can generate a groundswell of support encouraging the airline to not only fly interisland but to do it as soon as possible, we may have a surprise Christmas present. However, in order for this to happen, we need the immediate participation and support of the future passengers of Southwest Airlines — the answer to lower airfares for interisland travel.

As soon as you finish reading The Maui News and before you do anything else, please write to President Tom Nealon, Southwest Airlines, P.O. Box 36647-1CR, Dallas, Texas 75235, or email
