Taxpayers are being taken for a ride

There was a story in the Sept. 26 Maui News about dangerous conditions at the Maui Community Correctional Center regarding fire safety issues. It went on to say that this is the second time this summer that the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration has fined the corrections center for violations. It seems to me that the taxpayers are being taken for a ride.

How will MCCC be held accountable when the person being penalized is the taxpayer? If there are repeated violations, then the person responsible should have some skin in the game. A suspension without pay for a period of time would get more results. How about have the Fire Department do monthly inspections.

Having one taxpayer-funded organization fine another taxpayer-funded organization with taxpayer money is a sham.
