How is growing and slaughtering cattle pono?

So happy that we will not burn sugar cane anymore. Yet, I am horrified at what Mahi Pono is planning to do with the island and to the island. Cattle farming and slaughterhouse. Really?

Pono means to do right, to be with integrity. How is growing and slaughtering cattle congruent with that? Growing cattle is detrimental to the environment. When done in open fields, it destroys the land, causing desertification, is an immense source of water wastage, releases immense amounts of methane gas to the atmosphere (methane gas is 10 times more toxic than CO2) and is a huge waste of land usage. Where do the urine, feces and blood from the slaughterhouse go? Into our ocean, streams, land? Meat is a known carcinogen. Making money from destroying the land and feeding people cancer is not pono in any way, shape or form.

Please, use the land in a true pono way. Grow plant food, grow hemp, grow bamboo, things we could eat and build from, to truly make this island sustainable for the people and wildlife. In 2019 people are moving away from consuming meat and desire more plant alternatives. Please encourage Mahi non-pono to reconsider their choices.
