Make Piilani Highway a ‘Complete Street’

In my two terms as state Representative for South Maui, one of my main accomplishments was the adoption of the Complete Streets law for our state. This law required all modes of transportation be included in all new roads: walking, biking, transit and auto.

The recent visit by a representative of the Metropolitan Planning Association can help guide our efforts in establishing the Piilani corridor as the template to guide our next community plan as a specific plan. The first step is to get our new representative to ask Na Ala Hele to establish a walking/bike path along the mauka edge of the corridor far from the dangerous unpleasant route presently along the road shoulder and leave plenty of room for a small-gauge rail line. This will allow us to take advantage of federal tax credits passed by our U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz for transit-oriented developments and create the compact towns along the route that allow people-centered towns.

This is our chance to create the Kihei that reflects what’s in our current plan and in our future as truly a town within a park. Yes we can!
