Drama teacher deserving of a true standing ovation

Sometimes our true heroes are educators whose dedication, passion and empathy for their students create not only a learning environment but a sanctuary for teens to be themselves in a safe and accepting environment.

Over the course of the past two years, I have come to admire King Kekaulike High School’s drama teacher and artistic director Chris Kepler immensely for the work he does with his youthful charges.

The recent sold-out performance of “Annie” at the state-of-the art performing arts center are the obvious achievements that are testimony to his hard work and those of his talented students.

What is less obvious are the long hours and duties he takes on cultivating a nurturing family atmosphere for his students and parent helpers who volunteer their time.

It’s a given that teachers are underpaid and overworked and in most cases never given their due for simply showing up and doing their best.

Mr. Kepler’s kindness, joy, enthusiasm and talent are deserving of a true standing ovation.
