Appropriation for affordable housing is commendable

After reading Council Member Tasha Kama’s report in The Maui News on the funding of affordable housing, (“Council’s 3 Minutes,” June 23), I find it commendable that the council is setting aside 4 percent of the real property tax for affordable housing. Few taxpayers would quibble with the appropriation for affordable housing if it does not increase the current property tax.

I’m a bit curious however, as to what the council defines as “affordable housing” in terms of where it’s located, what these apartments or homes look like and what they will cost.
