Increase in fires on Maui warrants more firefighters
With all of the fires happening around Maui, we need more firefighters. There is a lack of manpower. With shifts being understaffed, it creates unnecessary stress for the men and women working to protect our island. With the firefighter’s test being as difficult as it is, it keeps those who are not qualified out, but also limits the number of jobs.
My solution for this would be by opening up and manning each station more properly. My father is a captain at the Kahului Airport fire station and he constantly has people coming up to him and asking him how to get in. Even though they pass the tests, they don’t get the job. We lose a lot of the qualified people to Oahu, having a lot being sent away and not kept on Maui.
Having said that, we should keep as many people as we can by opening up spots and having more training done on Maui.
