Society unraveling, still time to stop it

Go back in time and tell anyone about America today and they’d dismiss as impossible everything they’d been told.

For instance, Americans are routinely slaughtered or wounded by madmen armed with assault rifles — on streets, in nightclubs, concerts, churches, movie theaters, retail stores and schools. Gun violence is epidemic, but our Republican-majority U.S. Senate, led by a tobacco advocate from Kentucky, refuses to pass laws to stop this madness.

Many parts of the country have been devastated by climate change — fires, epic hurricanes, floods, drought, heat waves.

Police officers are regularly shot dead in the line of duty; this happened on the Big Island recently. Police officers are committing suicide in record numbers.

Twenty American military veterans kill themselves every single day.

Hundreds of thousands have fatally overdosed on drugs, mostly opioids, including over 70,000 people in 2017 alone.

Though he lost the popular vote by almost 3 million votes in 2016, a president was elected who is a white supremacist, pathological liar, rapist, morally and ethically bankrupt narcissist whose supporters cheer or dismiss as unimportant his every move, no matter how egregious.

He’s dismantled relationships with America’s allies while defending the world’s worst dictators. Calling climate change a hoax, he’s ordered reckless rollbacks of policies protecting the environment and endangered species. This utterly corrupt, totally inept charlatan must be removed from office, by impeachment or by the ballot box. An impeachment inquiry is now underway. The presidential election is on Nov. 3, 2020.
