Offended by ‘wu wu’ screamed at events

At the risk of seeming to be a curmudgeon, my complaint involves the people at entertainment venues who, instead of applauding, scream “wu wu” as a substitute for applause. This was at the MACC recently.

This usually is a young person’s habit, but sometimes older folk do it too. The “wu wu” offends the ear always, but especially when screamed in the middle of a song.

Once an older lady next to me in Iao Theater screamed at the end of a provocative dialogue. I turned and asked if she would do this in a Broadway theater. She didn’t reply, stopped for a few minutes, and then resumed the “wu wu.” Am I alone?
