Fireworks laws useless unless they are enforced

I read recently that the lawmakers made some changes in the laws to make it easier for the police to take enforcement action against illegal fireworks. I also read of one seizure of illegal fireworks on Maui some time ago, which tells me MPD wants us to know that they do occasionally take action. Even with these common-sense changes to the law to make it easier for the police to do their job, and regardless of how strict any penalties are, laws are useless unless they are enforced.

So, please enlighten me — was there any enforcement action taken against illegal aerial fireworks by Maui PD in Central Maui on New Year’s Eve? Judging from the display all evening, my guess is there wasn’t. Maybe The Maui News can ask MPD and let the public know if the police did anything about the problem that night.

I’d also like to know if there are any stats on how many pets ran away due to all of the fireworks.

And lastly, thank you to all of the fireworks enthusiasts for our terrified dogs and for all of the cardboard and other debris in my yard from your activities that night. A quick walk around the neighborhood shows that many of you aren’t very good at cleaning up the debris in the street and gutters in front of your houses. But that will all end up in the ocean, right? All good, brah.
