Plan exceeds county protocol for lap-swimming program

It’s okay to drink in a bar, but it’s not okay to exercise in an outdoor pool while following social distancing protocol as part of the Maui Masters Swim program?

It’s okay to exercise in an indoor gym or fitness studio, but it’s not okay to exercise in an outdoor pool while following social distancing protocol as part of the Maui Masters Swim program?

It’s okay to sit two feet apart in an outrigger canoe, but it’s not okay to exercise in an outdoor pool while following social distancing protocol as part of the Maui Masters Swim Program?

It’s okay for working adults to give up swimming because they can’t arrive at the county pools between 8:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m., the only times offered in the county’s lap swim program?

It’s okay for adults to give up swimming because their dermatologists have advised them to stay out of the sun, and the Maui Masters Swim program in the evening and early morning is not allowed to operate?

No . . . it’s all not okay.

A month ago, the Maui Masters Swim board provided county officials with a plan for safe socially distanced swim workouts, based on recommendations by US Masters Swimming. The plan exceeds the protocol in the county’s own lap swimming program. Maui Masters officials have not heard back from the county about this plan.

Many adults and seniors depend on swimming for low-impact, joint-friendly exercise that reduces arthritis and back pain. Mayor Victorino, please allow Maui Masters Swimming to resume pool workouts ASAP.
