Praiseworthy actions by council members

The receptiveness of various Maui County Council members has been extraordinary.

The council, by way of such members as Yuki Lei Sugimura, has quickly addressed unsafe, horrific conditions. One example is her immediate measure to control vehicle disposal near the Haiku Community Center.

Another is the clever control by folks on council such as Alice Lee of dangerous, disruptive conditions such as fireworks. Kudos to each member.

Members have also stepped in to keep us safe during this special time. Further, members are also clearly striving to replace sources of income in various ways. Since the realization that unemployment comp/pandemic funds have gone back into the community, that safety net has helped.

Whether the net widens or not, those who have sought work, with those who have worked on independent contractor/gig endeavors during the pandemic, ought clearly to receive benefits.

Maui has stepped forward by way of the media to get community action on masking, distancing, along with wise plus gentle advance forecasting of actions. Those actions among others are controlling spread. Meanwhile, the gradual reopening of pools plus parks is super.

Mahalo nui loa to these public servants. They are clearly among our best.
