Vote yes on all charter initiatives in November

Mahalo to all the council members who voted to allow all of the charter amendments to be on the ballot in November.

They are well thought out and have been years in the making. They allow a balance between the county council and the mayor; ensure professional management instead of whoever a new mayor wants to reward with a new job; and gives us the extraordinary ability to have a proactive supportive department of agriculture to fill in the void of an ineffective Hawaii state system that is not set up to support small sustainable agriculture.

The list goes on in clarifying and empowering our local government, bringing it into the 21st century.

A county department of agriculture would usher in the ability to work together to feed ourselves, directly supplying at least 30 percent of our local food needs. A great return on a small investment. Amended to ensure the department would be supportive versus regulatory. Wow! We have so many capable people and ideas that can be implemented with help from a long-term vision supported by a stable county department.

I urge everyone to vote for all amendments and help Maui move towards home rule, which means to be more mature in our ways of approaching governance and more professional with our handling of our government systems.
