How does activism mesh with democratic principles?
I am writing about the recent article on how the Thirty Meter Telescope has inspired activism in other areas.
What I wonder is how this meshes with our democratic principles that we live by. Who is deciding what is to be protected? Is there a democratic process to decide that or is this coming from some individuals? Who is making sure such activism is not resulting in harm to others and is an overall benefit to the entire community?
For instance, the protest against the wind turbines is understandable as they are ugly. But so is the bleaching of our coral due to global warming. Those wind turbines are supposed to reduce our use of fossil fuels which is good for everyone in many ways. So, who is deciding that turbines are bad but bleached coral is good? Seems like we need to be voting on these things.
