Delay in Maui’s vaccine has grave consequences

Why has Maui’s vaccine supply stopped?

Lt. Gov. Josh Green flew to Maui to do a press conference with Mayor Victorino on Jan. 14, when he promised that he would give us at least enough vaccine to match our percentage of population.

The very next day, Maui Health had to cancel all appointments for initial vaccinations for the next three weeks, through Feb. 7. This at a time when our numbers are dramatically increasing and several new, even more infectious strains have been found in the U.S.

We are watching the mass vaccination efforts on O’ahu while Maui gets nothing, except for second doses.

It is understandable that second doses are a priority. However, the state is far behind in its distribution of vaccine doses that are already in hand, so it doesn’t make sense that nothing is being done on Maui.

Maui is just asking to be treated equitably, and vaccination offers the only glimmer of hope in this COVID nightmare. A three-week delay in our vaccination program will have grave consequences to our ability to recover from this.
