Ocean would rise despite man-made global warming

I am writing in regard to the recent article in The Maui News regarding sea level rise and erosion (Feb. 27).

Changes in sea level are a fact of nature and it becomes a pointless exercise to fight what is natural.

As recently as 10,000 years ago, the sea was 150 feet lower than it is today and you could walk to Lana’i from Maui.

Even without man-made global warming, our oceans would be rising since we are in a natural interglacial period. Global warming is speeding up the rise, but it would occur anyway.

It is questionable if the state or the county should engage in trying to stop natural processes like beach erosion. And it is not the responsibility of our government to bail out hotels and condos that were built too close to the shoreline.

We need to live with our environment and part of that is accepting that nature changes it all the time.
