Condo classification as transient rental unfair

Regarding the news article in The Maui News (Friday, March 26, 2021, “Mayor proposes nearly $829 million budget”), the mayor failed to mention that the Maui County Council, with the mayor’s apparent approval, has reclassified most condominiums which are not owned by full-time residents as short-term vacation rentals, whether they are rented out or not.

This will most likely result in substantial increases in property taxes for those of us who spend our winters here and never rent out our condos.

As snowbirds, we contribute many dollars to the Maui economy. Many of us feel this reclassification is unfair, and possibly illegal.
