Beach restoration ecological disaster

The proposed Ka’anapali beach restoration is being called “beach nourishment” by those requesting it.

That phrase is really designed to sugarcoat the fact that mining sand from offshore beds and depositing it on the beach is an ecological disaster and a waste of public money.

The ocean rises and falls daily with tides. There is natural wave and current action, and the occasional storm and even less occasional tsunami batter the beach. All of these are normal and work to erode some beaches and build others.

Fighting nature is crazy, as nature is far more patient and will win every time. The more we fight it, the more harm we do to other parts of the ecosystem. Leave it alone.
