Cruise ships’ return totally irresponsible

Just this past week, there were three cruise ships in Maui, with two of them accommodating up to 2,200 passengers.

Several more are scheduled to arrive in Lahaina and Kahului. The CDC has put cruise vessels at a level 4, the highest classification stating that people should avoid cruise ship travel regardless of their vaccination status.

Cruise ships are known vectors for transmission of COVID-19. The CDC reports that there are 90 cruise ships under investigation or observation because of COVID-19 cases and outbreaks.

Passengers are not required to take a COVID test upon disembarking. Our hospital, clinics and first responders are already shortstaffed and overwhelmed with residents and visitors. Considering that we are at a surge of COVID cases in Hawaii, it was totally irresponsible of Gov. David Ige, Lt. Gov. Josh Green, the Departments of Health and Transportation to approve of the return of cruise ships to Hawaii.
