Would Bissen address county corruption?

I helped to draft the resolution for a formal investigation, unanimously approved by Maui County Council, to investigate Mayor Michael Victorino’s planning and public works departments regarding the Greg Brown development.

Mayor Victorino made promises to hold developers responsible for their unfulfilled obligations to the county. These promises included pursuing violations, which were made known to him by one of his own staff members who was hired to work with the council to assess and collect millions owed the county in developer agreements.

However, the mayor’s own administration refuses to allow the mayor to pursue these violations, or, to act to collect upon the developer’s agreements.

Instead, Mayor Victorino’s county attorneys fire, fight and calumniate whistleblowers who make these violations public, and obstruct Victorino from doing the job he was elected to do.

How is it that Mayor Victorino has allowed them to get away with this? Mike Victorino, who talked tough, has unfortunately been too weak to act.

Will a Richard Bissen administration be different? Honorable Bissen, do you have the courage and willingness to address the decades-old county corruption? I sure would like to find out.
